There is one bill for each home. <BR> The amount payable generally depends on the size and value of the dwelling. The greater the value of the property, the greater the tax. It is important to register for council tax with the local council as soon as you move into a property. <BR> Normally the owner or tenant of the house or flat is responsible for the payment of council tax. Payment may be made in a lump sum each year, by two equal instalments, or by ten instalments from April to January. <BR> There are a number of methods to pay your Council Tax <BR> by: <BR> " direct debit <BR> " standing order <BR> " cash <BR>" credit or debit card <BR> " online <P>Cash should not be sent through the post. <BR> Cheque, postal order, money order Cheques, postal orders and money orders are accepted at the Civic Centre, Council Housing Offices and Post Offices. <P><U><B> Remember!</B></U> Have your Payment card with you whenever you want to pay. <BR> Cheques, postal orders and money orders can be sent by post to the Council Tax Department. <P> The payment card is used to pay the Council Tax. <BR> The name of the Council Tax payer(s) and account number are printed on the card. The electronic strip also contains the name(s) and account number but not how much has to be paid. You will still be sent a Council Tax Bill which will detail what you need to pay and when. <BR> There is no charge for using the card and it can be used at any Post Office, Pay Point, Housing branch office and the Civic Centre cash office. The card cannot be used at banks. <BR> If you lose or damage your card, you need to contact the Council Tax Department and ask for a replacement. <P> Some discounts are available. Single occupants of a property will pay 25% less. Students can apply for exemption, and those on a low income can apply for council tax benefit. <P> If you miss a payment Council Tax Department will start recovery action. If you have problems paying your Council Tax bill, please let this department know immediately. They will look into you case and where possible try to negotiate another payment arrangement.
