It is an offence to drive without a licence. A full driving licence is obtained by passing the driving test. Drivers may continue to use their licence until they are 70. Licences for drivers over 70 are issued for three years at a time. <P><B> <FONT color=#006f7f>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<U>Overseas licences</U></FONT></B> <br> A person who comes to Britain from overseas, and drives on UK roads, must be able to produce a valid driving licence. Anyone who drives a motor vehicle on the road, and is unable to produce a valid driving licence, commits an offence. A full driving licence obtained from a country within the European Union, or from Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway, may be used in Britain for as long as the licence remains valid. <P> If your driving licence is from any other country, you may drive any category of small vehicle shown on your licence for up to 12 months. However, during this period you must obtain a provisional British licence and pass both your theory and practical driving tests. <P><B> <FONT color=#006f7f>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<U>Motor insurance</U></FONT></B> <BR> It is an offence to drive, ride, or even place a motor vehicle on the road without proper insurance. The penalties for this are very heavy. Drivers without insurance face heavy fines and possible disqualification from driving. It is also an offence for someone to allow their car or motorcycle to be used by a person not insured to drive it. <P><B> <FONT color=#006f7f>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<U>Road tax and MOT</U></FONT></B> <BR> Any motor vehicle that is being used, or is standing, on a public road must display an up-to-date road tax disc, available from a post office. Vehicles that are not properly taxed may be clamped or towed away. A penalty is charged to recover the car, plus the cost of the road tax. <BR> Each year, vehicles that are three or more years old must be taken for a Ministry of Transport (MOT) test. This is carried out at any approved garade.
