It tries to provide all citizens with the highest level of medical care. Treatment is free. <P><B><FONT color=#006f7f>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<U> Finding a doctor</U> </FONT></U></B> <br> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Family doctors in Britain are known as general Practitioners, and usually called GPs. Doctors look after the health of people in their local community and deal with a whole range of health problems. They also give health education and advice on things like smoking and diet, run clinics, give vaccinations and carry out simple surgical operations. <BR> Your GP is responsible, at least at first, for arranging almost all the treatment that you receive. This can cover a wide range of problems, and include mental as well as physical illness. Only your GP can arrange for you to see a specialist in hospital  although in a genuine emergency, such as a sudden injury or illness, you can attend an NHS hospital without GP s letter, by going to the hospital s Accident and Emergency department. <P> Doctors usually work with a team including nurses, health visitors and midwives, as well as a range of other health professionals such as physiotherapists and occupational therapists. If a Doctor cannot deal with your problem themselves, they'll usually refer you to a hospital for tests, treatment or to see a consultant with specialised knowledge. <P> Every individual living lawfully and on a settled basis in the UK has a right to be registered with a local Doctors surgery and visits to the surgery are free. <P> You have the right to change your Doctor without having to give a reason. The process of finding a new Doctor is similar to registering. However, it would be extremely helpful (for administrative purposes) to notify the surgery that you are leaving. <P> Where a person has registered as a patient at a doctors' surgery, they may receive a NHS Medical Card, which exists for purely NHS administrative purposes, and provides basic details such as a patient's name, address, NHS number, registered practice (or the name of an individual practitioner) and details of the local PCT. <BR> A list of local GPs is available from libraries, main post offices, the tourist information office, and the local Health Authority. <P> NHS Direct is 24-hour nurse and health information service providing confidential information on particular health conditions and what to do if you are feeling ill, tel <U><B><FONT color=#006f7f> &nbsp;&nbsp;0845 46 47</U></B></FONT>. <BR> You may ask for an interpreter to provide advice in your own language. <P><STRONG><FONT color=#006f7f> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<U> Charges</U> </FONT></STRONG> <br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Treatment from your GP is free, but charges are made for most prescriptions and for certain services, such as vaccinations for going abroad. <P><B> <FONT color=#006f7f>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<U>Prescriptions</U></FONT></B> <br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;If the doctor decides to prescribe medication for your condition you will be given a prescription to take to the local pharmacy or chemist. <P><STRONG><FONT color=#006f7f>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <U> Dentist</U> </FONT></STRONG> <br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;This treatment is not free. Free treatment is available to certain groups of people.
